Thoughts on the 2008 Beijing Olympics August 24, 2008

I have to say that I was really impressed with the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics. The sheer number of participants and the choreography were simply amazing. Some of the wire-work was a bit distracting, but overall, it was a really impressive show.
As for the games themselves, I think I used to get a lot more excited about them. I remembered that as a kid, the Olympics were a huge deal. There was a sense of watching history in the making… I don’t really feel that anymore. I’m not sure what has changed… maybe it is the fact that they have switched to alternating summer and winter Olympics every two years, rather than waiting 4 years and having both in the same year. Or maybe it is the fact that everytime I tried to tune in, it was either synchronized diving or swimming. Or maybe it is the biased coverage that seems to focus primarily on the events that America is expected to medal in. Or maybe the fact that we can now see the results of the competition hours before they are broadcast. OR maybe it is just me getting old and jaded.
The bottom line was that I actually spent very little time actually watching the Olympics. I’ll probably wait until they come out with the DVD and catch the highlights.
